My current thinking is to make it all work without Javascript and then use JS to improve the book reading and browsing experience. For example, iPad users won't have to touch each page to hear the speech. And Javascript enabled users will get a much smoother experience.

I'm also going to include a banner encouraging people without Javascript to turn it on.

Re: How many Tar Heel Reader users have Javascript disabled?

You certainly don't want to shut out the folks who run with JavaScript turned off, but you also shouldn't design down to those folks either. Having a fall-back position for them is necessary, but the folks who have it enabled should generally be given a better experience.

Re: Gary Bishop

Noah is eager to participate in the event Maze days for the third consecutive year .. I thought it may have been due to the computers having newer versions of Firefox?? No need to include Braille, it will be fine as you
described it. Let's talk when we meet. Think about how you would play
without seeing it. But including visuals is good too because some of
the kids have some vision plus its great to be able to share games
with your sighted siblings and friends.

I've got some tools (see the blog) for spatial sound.

I love the revealing letters + guessing component.

This is an excellent idea. If you're interested in doing it in
Javascript + HTML5 we have lots of tools to help but Flash or iPad app
or whatever will be fine.

Thanks for jumping in.
gb.

Re: Gary Bishop

Hi Professor Bishop,

I am a CS graduate student here at UNC. I found your blog while I was looking at your calendar trying to propose a meeting time with you. :) Your game idea reminded me of a kid's game I created a while ago. It is like merging the Frogger game with Hangman. Originally it was not designed for visually-impaired kids. However, after reading your blog, I have come up some ideas to modify my game to incorporate your game idea for the visually-impaired kids.

For example, here are some ideas that I think I may be able to implement before the Maze Day.
(Please feel free to check out my game if you are interested and see what I am talking about regarding the modifications that can be made:
http://www.wfu.edu/~ylwong/... )

1. A sound plays whenever a log, lily pad, or yellow box is in front of the frog so the player knows when it's the good time to press the arrow key to make the frog to jump forward.

2. I could also add spatial sound to indicate the horizontal position of the frog while crossing the river. For example, a sound clip on the left channel plays louder than the right channel when the frog is more on the left of the screen.

3. When the frog safely lands inside the yellow box, a letter will be revealed. I can make the game to read out the key sequence that represents the letter (to have the player to figure out the letter) or read out the letter to have the player to figure out the key sequence.

4. For the gameplay's sake, I could also add a timer. The sooner the player can figure out the letter or key sequence for that letter, the higher the score they will get.

5. Note that each word has 6 letters and the player has exactly 6 frogs to uncover the letters. If one or more frogs miss the yellow box, then the player will not be given all 6 letters and will have to guess the word, which is a good--as a spelling practice exercise. This was one of my intents for my original game. I could modify the game such that the player does not have to use all 6 frogs. If the player knows the whole word based on only a few letters, they could spell it out and get the bonus points.

I love programming games for kids but I don't know how Braille works. So, I apologize if I am off the topic.

- Yue-Ling

Re: Gary Bishop

Backspace in some browsers is equivalent to the Back button that takes
you to the previous page.
